Facebook Begins Deleting Fake User Accounts and Fake Likes

In a roundabout sort of way, Facebook tattled on itself earlier in the summer when, in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), it fessed up to the fact that nearly 9 percent of the social networking site's accounts are fake, bogus, the unreal McCoy. Or, as Facebook labeled them, "undesirable" or "false" accounts, which are those that belong to spammers or "where users have created personal profiles for a business, organization, or non-human entity such as a pet." Let the clean-up act begin.

As promised, Facebook has started deleting fake accounts and Page Likes. In a Facebook Security blog post last month, the site said it would soon be purging certain accounts and Likes in order to improve the integrity of the social networking service, a move that was expected to affect, on average, less than 1 percent of Likes on any given Page. For some, that adds up to a lot of Likes.

Intel Launches Clover Trail Atom Z2760 SoC

Though we gave you a glimpse of it in our IDF 2012 coverage, Intel is officially unveiling their new Atom Z2760 dual-core SoC (System on Chip), code named Clover Trail.  The Z2760 is a dual-core Atom-based chip with a 1.8GHz clock frequency and support for Intel Hyperthreading technology which allows two cores to process four threads to enhance performance in multithreaded workloads.  Clover Trail is manufactured using Intel's 32nm process node and is targeted at ultra-mobile computing applications like tablets and adjacent convertible devices.  Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX545 graphics core has been coupled with the Atom architecture on the Z2760 for what Intel claims will be the best, low-power Windows 8 tablet experience available when they begin to ship from a number of top name manufacturers in the coming months.

In fact Intel is claiming design wins from virtually all the top brands, including: Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, LG, Samsung, ZTE, and others. “This is just the beginning of Intel’s effort in the tablet market, and our goal is to deliver products that fit the spectrum of evolving needs of both consumers and business users without compromising on compatibility, experience or battery life,” said Erik Reid, general manager, Application Processor Platforms for Intel’s Mobile and Communications Group. “When people or corporations buy a device with Intel Inside, they’re getting the best of Windows 8 features with a computing experience that just works.”

HP Outs webOS 1.0

It’s been a long road back from the brink for webOS, but today HP kept its promiseabout reviving the mobile operating system and unveiled webOS 1.0 just weeks after debuting a beta version.

“Our combined efforts with the community and hard work have paid off, and we are now ready to move on to the next phase together,” the team stated in a blog post. “With this release we have affirmed our commitment to meet our goals and create a vibrant open source community.”

There is now an OpenEmbedded build that runs inside an OE emulator, email, a browser, Enyo2 support, and more. HP says there are more than 75 components built for webOS. webOS can now also be ported to new devices.

Curious? Here’s a demo video:

Look for additional features, including Qt5 / WebKit2, open sourced media and audio components, BlueZ Bluetooth stack, ConnMan network management, and optimized SysMgr rendering architecture, in the coming months.

Microsoft Details Windows 8 And IE10 Internal Testing

A product is only as good as its creators say it is, and in the case of Windows 8, it looks as if it's not going to hit store shelves until those within Microsoft's walls test the heck out of it. A new blog post today over at the company's site details the story of deploying Windows 8 within Microsoft, which it fondly refers to as "dogfooding." Basically, it's the forced act of eating their own dogfood. It's a pretty strange, potentially graphic visual, but it goes to show that the company isn't taking the launch lightly. According to Microsoft, it "enables the IT department to help Microsoft’s product teams deliver higher quality products and services to customers, both near-term and long-term."

Currently, a few products in the Microsoft stable have hit this position, but it's Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 Release Preview getting the most attention. As of mid-July, over 30,000 systems and nearly 30,000 employees were running both. And if that's not a great way to beta test, what is? You can read a bit more on Microsoft's journey below, and it's actually a pretty fascinating thing. It's rare that companies open up their stories in this way, and it's certainly good to see Windows 8 undergoing such intense testing prior to October 26th. That's right; Windows 8 hits next month!

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Round-Up: MSI, ZOTAC, Gigabyte

In the past few months, we have taken a look at no less than four new high-end GPUs from NVIDIA based on the company’s Kepler microarchitecture. NVIDIA kicked things off with the GeForce GTX 680 back in May and followed up a few weeks later with the monstrous, dual-GPU powered GeForce GTX 690, which remains the fastest graphics card in existence. A few days after that, the GeForce GTX 670 hit the scene and last month marked the arrival of the GeForce GTX 660 Ti. While all of these GeForce GTX 600 series cards differ in their delivered performance levels, they do have something major in common--they are all based on the same GK104 GPU.

Today, NVIDIA is announcing two more GeForce GTX 600 series graphics cards, but unlike their older brothers, the new GeForce GTX 660 and GeForce GTX 650 are based on two different GPUs, the GK106 and GK107, respectively…

Intel Notes Next Gen Clover Trail Atom CPUs Won’t Run Linux

Intel reportedly revealed during IDF this week that its upcoming Clover Trail Atom processor platform will shun Linux support. As Intel explains it, the company's dual-core Clover Trail part is designed for Windows 8 and "the chip cannot run Linux." Oh really?

That's a bit of a curious statement. Clover Trail is, after all, a x86 part, so there's no reason that it can'tsupport Linux, even if Intel has plenty of reason why it won't. Rather than some kind of technical limitation that Intel's brilliant minds back by nearly unlimited resources aren't able to figure out, it appears this is an arbitrary restriction as part of an odd power play by the world's largest semiconductor player.

Kensington Intros Two USB 3.0-Enabled DisplayLink Docking Stations

Docking stations aren't what they once were. While they used to be just about everywhere, oftentimes tied to chubby business laptops, the increased power and use of wireless technologies has made them a bit of a dud. But there's still room for more universal solutions, particularly with USB 3.0 out in the open. Kensington has launched two new USB 3.0 docks based around DisplayLink's USB graphics tech, which also includes support for Gigabit Ethernet and Audio.

The Office Dock sd3500v provides the ultimate hot desk expansion and productivity solution with dual-head video support for HDMI and DVI/VGA displays, Gigabit Ethernet, up to 5.1 channel audio via HDMI, and USB3 and USB2 expansion ports, all powered by DisplayLink's highly integrated DL-3900 IC. The Home Dock sd3000v is the easiest and most efficient way to expand the home desktop with a single SuperSpeed USB3.0 connection, notebook users get a DVI/VGA display connection, Gigabit Ethernet, Audio, and USB3 and USB2 expansion ports, all enabled by DisplayLink's DL-3700 IC. Both docks feature "hot plug" functionality for audio and video, automatically detecting and routing sound and graphics to the peripherals as they are connected to the dock.

The new Kensington USB3.0 Office Dock (sd3500v) and USB3.0 Home Dock (sd3000v) are available worldwide, with an MSRP of $169.99 and $199.99 respectively.
