Hang Tight Galaxy S III Owners, Samsung Promises to Dole Out Jelly Bean Soon

Samsung's Galaxy S III is widely considered to be the best Android smartphone currently available, if not the best smartphone regardless of platform (iPhone 4S and 5 owners might have something to say about that), and so it almost seems criminal that it's not rocking the latest and greatest version of Google's open source operating system, Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). If you own a Galaxy S III, hang in there, a Jelly Bean update is in the works.

That's the good news. The bad news? Samsung said it will be rolling out Android 4.1 to Galaxy S III owners in the U.S. "in the coming months," so there's no concrete date to work with. Is Samsung talking about two months? Three months? Four or more? We don't know, though we're anticipating an update by the end of the year. Choice of carrier will also play a role in determining when your device will receive the upgraded OS.

"The update will be made available both over the air and as a download via Kies, Samsung’s content sync and software update solution," Samsung said. "The specific timing and update method will be announced by each carrier partner, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular."

In addition to all the goodies that Jelly Bean brings to the table, Samsung said it added a host of new and enhanced TouchWiz features, many of which are aimed at making it faster and more responsive. You can also expect camera enhancements, such as new live camera and camcorder filters, the ability to pause and resume recording videos, and a low light photo mode.
