Intel Launches Clover Trail Atom Z2760 SoC

Though we gave you a glimpse of it in our IDF 2012 coverage, Intel is officially unveiling their new Atom Z2760 dual-core SoC (System on Chip), code named Clover Trail.  The Z2760 is a dual-core Atom-based chip with a 1.8GHz clock frequency and support for Intel Hyperthreading technology which allows two cores to process four threads to enhance performance in multithreaded workloads.  Clover Trail is manufactured using Intel's 32nm process node and is targeted at ultra-mobile computing applications like tablets and adjacent convertible devices.  Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX545 graphics core has been coupled with the Atom architecture on the Z2760 for what Intel claims will be the best, low-power Windows 8 tablet experience available when they begin to ship from a number of top name manufacturers in the coming months.

In fact Intel is claiming design wins from virtually all the top brands, including: Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, LG, Samsung, ZTE, and others. “This is just the beginning of Intel’s effort in the tablet market, and our goal is to deliver products that fit the spectrum of evolving needs of both consumers and business users without compromising on compatibility, experience or battery life,” said Erik Reid, general manager, Application Processor Platforms for Intel’s Mobile and Communications Group. “When people or corporations buy a device with Intel Inside, they’re getting the best of Windows 8 features with a computing experience that just works.”

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Round-Up: MSI, ZOTAC, Gigabyte

In the past few months, we have taken a look at no less than four new high-end GPUs from NVIDIA based on the company’s Kepler microarchitecture. NVIDIA kicked things off with the GeForce GTX 680 back in May and followed up a few weeks later with the monstrous, dual-GPU powered GeForce GTX 690, which remains the fastest graphics card in existence. A few days after that, the GeForce GTX 670 hit the scene and last month marked the arrival of the GeForce GTX 660 Ti. While all of these GeForce GTX 600 series cards differ in their delivered performance levels, they do have something major in common--they are all based on the same GK104 GPU.

Today, NVIDIA is announcing two more GeForce GTX 600 series graphics cards, but unlike their older brothers, the new GeForce GTX 660 and GeForce GTX 650 are based on two different GPUs, the GK106 and GK107, respectively…

Kensington Intros Two USB 3.0-Enabled DisplayLink Docking Stations

Docking stations aren't what they once were. While they used to be just about everywhere, oftentimes tied to chubby business laptops, the increased power and use of wireless technologies has made them a bit of a dud. But there's still room for more universal solutions, particularly with USB 3.0 out in the open. Kensington has launched two new USB 3.0 docks based around DisplayLink's USB graphics tech, which also includes support for Gigabit Ethernet and Audio.

The Office Dock sd3500v provides the ultimate hot desk expansion and productivity solution with dual-head video support for HDMI and DVI/VGA displays, Gigabit Ethernet, up to 5.1 channel audio via HDMI, and USB3 and USB2 expansion ports, all powered by DisplayLink's highly integrated DL-3900 IC. The Home Dock sd3000v is the easiest and most efficient way to expand the home desktop with a single SuperSpeed USB3.0 connection, notebook users get a DVI/VGA display connection, Gigabit Ethernet, Audio, and USB3 and USB2 expansion ports, all enabled by DisplayLink's DL-3700 IC. Both docks feature "hot plug" functionality for audio and video, automatically detecting and routing sound and graphics to the peripherals as they are connected to the dock.

The new Kensington USB3.0 Office Dock (sd3500v) and USB3.0 Home Dock (sd3000v) are available worldwide, with an MSRP of $169.99 and $199.99 respectively.

WD Delivers My Book VelociRaptor Duo External HDD

WD Delivers My Book VelociRaptor Duo External HDD System with Thunderbolt Interface and 10K RPM Drives

Not to be outdone in the speed department by the new USB 3.0-capable WD My Passport for Mac external drives, Western Digital’s new My Book VelociRaptor Duo line of external drives boasts a pair of smoking fast Thunderbolt ports.

What’s more, the device has two 10,000 RPM 1TB WD VelociRaptor drives rumbling inside, and between them and the Thunderbolt interface, the unit offers about as much speed as you can get from an external storage system without slapping in an SSD.

In fact, WD states that the My Book VelociRaptor Duo offers transfer rates of 400MBps. According to the company, the unit can transfer almost two dozen full-length HD movies in under 65 seconds; two thousand picture of 5MB in size in under 33 seconds; and five hundred 5MB songs in under 8 seconds.

Photo Reveals Apple iPhone 5 Likely to Receive A6 Processor Upgrade

With the all the iPhone 5 leaks in recent weeks and months, Apple's going to have to reach far up its sleeve to pull something out if it hopes to surprise anyone. We know the iPhone 5 is going to have a larger touchscreen, smaller dock connector, and 4G LTE connectivity. It also seems likely Apple's next smartphone will sport an A6 processor.

Sonny Dickson, a 9to5Mac researcher and hacker, posted a photo to Twitter showing the iPhone 5's logic board containing an A6 chip.

How projector lamps work

A projector lamp is a fundamental feature of any projection device, so it really pays to understand how it works, and what steps you can take to enhance its longevity. Taking adequate steps to keep your lamp happy will most certainly save $$$, and unforeseen headache, well into the future.

What constitutes a projector lamp?

The lamp comprises three components, being the bulb, reflector, and a cage.

How does a projector lamp work?

A projector lamp operates by sending an electrical current across an ultra-high pressurised mercury vapor which causes the lamp to emit an extremely intense, bright light, shone through a DLP or LCD system in order to display images. The complex technological nature of projection lamps is very costly to produce – translating to a fairly hefty consumer price tag.

AMD FirePro W8000, W9000 Challenge Nvidia's Quadro

AMD has a new set of high-end professional GPUs available -- and a new shot at the professional GPU crown. It's a move the company hopes will allow it to take a greater share of the professional 3D business. AMD's battle against Nvidia in the professional graphics market is similar to the company's struggles against Intel ten years ago.

Nvidia, meanwhile, has been largely idle. The company's high-end parts, the Quadro 4000, 5000, and 6000, are all based on the original Fermi architecture. By moving first with a new architecture, AMD has (at least hypothetically) stolen a march on its competition.

That's important, for a pretty fundamental reason.

This graph neatly captures why enthusiasts and consumers should care about AMD's professional graphics business. With a four year profit margin of just 5.1%, it's imperative that AMD begin to turn a higher profit from its graphics unit if it's going to keep up with Nvidia or invest significant funds into OpenCL or other optimizations for current software.
